Honest Cities

Honest Tea company conducted a social experiment in twelve cities across the country.

An unmanned kiosk was set up in each city. In or near each kiosk, was a sign indicating the cost was one dollar per bottle. There was also a box to place the dollar in...completely on the honor system.  Like me, you may be surprised at the results.  See the stats below.

Man Attempts to Rob Three Banks in One Day

On Thursday afternoon, a Utica, New York man attempted to rob a bank but left without getting any cash.  So he decided to rob a second bank and still got no cash.  So he entered the third bank and stepped up his game -- cursing at employees and demanding they put money into a bag.

Police received a telephone call from employees at the Key Bank that there was an attempted robbery. Police also received calls from two other banks saying the same man had attempted to rob their banks.

Officers went to "the scene" in an unmarked car and saw a man walking away from the bank. The suspect saw the police and ran away, but police caught him and took him to jail.

It is frustrating to have three failed attempts at bank robbery in one day and still leave without any cash -- well, it's probably because his weapon was a toilet plunger.  This bank robbery business is just not working out for Lawrence Deptola, 49.

Deptola actually threatened employees at Key Bank with the plunger...wow, I bet they were scared.

Since the plunger was found inside First Citizens Bank, this is probably where cops arrested him.

I say in the beginning of this post, Deptola left the banks without any money. There was no mention of any money being taken and it just seems logical that bank employees would not take seriously, a bank robber with a plunger as a weapon.  But, you never know, they could be like the employee who gave a bank robber cash at the drive-up window.

A Trailer, Three People and 134 Cats

Three people in Halfmoon, New York are charged with animal neglect. Earl J. Millard, Mary A. Ryan and Arthur C. Millard were living in a trailer with 134 cats.

Authorities were alerted to the situation when they received a complaint from an animal hospital about the condition of a cat brought to the hospital. The cat was brought to the hospital by its owner in such poor condition, it later died.

Law enforcement began an investigation that led them to the trailer where the three lived. When State Troopers arrived at the trailer, they found two cats already dead.

Nineteen of the cats removed from the trailer had to be euthanized. Of the remaining cats, eight were adopted and sixty-seven are in foster homes, including pregnant cats, mothers with kittens and kittens too small to be spayed or neutered. The remaining thirty-eight cats are available for adoption.

Earl and Arthur Millard are father and son and Mary Ryan is Earl's sister-in-law. They say they rescued cats from the streets in Troy and from around the trailer park.

Neighbors say the cats were not neutered and spayed and they mated underneath the trailer and had litters that are now running around the trailer park.

The Millards and Ryan are each charged with one count of failure to provide proper sustenance, animal neglect and failing to provide animals with vaccinations which is a violation of public health law.

Rescuing animals is admirable if that is really what they were doing. It appears they allowed the cats to continue growing the population. They obviously could not afford to feed and care for them but continued to allow them to have litter after litter.

The eccentric trio will need to find a new home. Living in those conditions is unsanitary and code enforcement later condemned the trailer.

Faking a Relative's Death

What's up with people faking a relative's death to get time off work? It seems there is absolutely nothing some people won't do.

Scott Bennett didn't have a problem faking his mother's death.  He wrote her obituary, submitted it to the newspaper and the newspaper published it.

I can imagine Scott's mother thought she was hearing things when she learned her obit was in the newspaper.  She promptly went to the newspaper to let them know she was alive.

Can you just imagine the look on both their faces when she told newspaper employee her name and they told her who placed the obit!  As mothers do, she will forgive him and I hope he apologized to her immediately.

In another story, Joan Barnett also faked a death to get time off from work...her daughter's. She was going on vacation to Costa Rica.  Because the vacation would extend past the children's school break, she forged a death certificate for one of her daughters and presented it to the school.

How anyone could lie about the death of their mother or child is a mystery to me. I wouldn't want to even speak such a thing into being.

Both these people should seriously think about what's most important in life and it isn't time off.

Man Plotted Fake Bear Attack on Ex-Girlfriend

So one day this guy was just sitting around trying to plan how to get rid of his girlfriend when he had a light bulb moment...a fake bear attack.

He planned to skin the bear, then wear the bear skin while attacking her. He further planned to attack her with the bear claws, leaving no footprints or DNA evidence behind. But I guess even he knew it was a stupid plan and decided to hire a hit man to do the deed.

He paid his friend $500 towards a $15,000 fee to drive head-on into her car, hoping to kill her. The friend should have turned him in to police if only for asking him to drive head-on in to a car! I guess it didn't occur to him that the friend could be killed as well.

His excuse is he was drunk and wouldn't have gone through with the plan once he sobered up. However, his excuse didn't stop his sentence of five to fifteen years in prison. Also, he can have no contact with the girlfriend until 2031.

Why did he want the mother of his child murdered? She threw him out of the house, again.

Of all the ways men and women choose to rid themselves of each other, this is absolutely the strangest.
