Elementary school children often don't like a particular teacher, but they don't usually try to kill her. Three fifth graders at Balderas Elementary School in Fresno, California did just that.
Two boys and girl put rat poison in the teacher's coffee, but got nervous and one boy knocked it out of her hand before she could drink it. They also put rat poison on a cup cake they offered her.
This happened back in December, but it has just come to the attention of authorities. One kid's mother was bragging about how her kid saved the teacher from drinking the poison. What he didn't tell her is that he was the one who gave the teacher the coffee laced with rat poison.
These kids freely admitted putting rat poison in the teacher's coffee. They didn't show remorse or concern that she may have died.
The parent who was bragging about her kid should be charged for not reporting the incident. She knew how dangerous this situation was and she didn't notify the authorities. Instead, she complained to the headteacher at the school that her child deserved praise for saving the teacher's life.
That she thought it was appropriate to brag about what her son did and ask for praise, indicates she is the root of his problems. The parent's values, attitudes and beliefs contribute to violence in young children.
Children in fifth grade are old enough to understand what death is and that it is permanent. I don't blame teachers, I wouldn't want them in my class either. Placing these students in an alternative school isn't the answer. They need to be placed in a juvenile detention center where they can get the counseling they so desperately need.
Peace
