Recently, I've seen lots of ads and signs advertising storage unit auctions. I always thought most people only left junk that they and no one else wanted.
John, who only wants to be identified by his first name, went to an auction at a storage facility. American Auctioneers, Dan and Laura Dodson of the television show, “Storage Wars” held the auction. Up for auction, are units that are, at least, three months behind in rental payments. Potential bidders are allowed to look into the storage units, from outside, for five minutes before bidding begins.
John bid on a unit and won with his bid of $1,100. Sorting through the things in the unit, he discovered a few gold bars, several silver bars and rare coins in a Rubbermaid container. His treasure is estimated at $500,000! The container was very heavy; it took three men to carry it.
Sources say an expert evaluated the treasure and described it as “Pieces of Eight Spanish Gold”. It’s believed the coins are dated between the 16th and 19th century.
According to reports, an elderly woman, recently deceased, owned the unit. Auctioneers are required to post a notice in the newspaper before auctioning the unit. I wonder if she has family who may not have known about the storage unit or seen the newspaper notice.
Too bad the Dotsons didn't have a camera crew there for this find...would have made a great episode for "Storage Wars". Although Dan and Laura Dotson say they are happy for John, I'm sure they wished they had known what was in that storage unit.
I will certainly pay more attention to storage unit auctions in the future. You never know...
Peace
