He said he did not like the work they found for him. He claimed he had a bad back so he was scheduled for a medical examination Monday to determine if he is physically able to work.
Hans had a very detailed plan. He waited for his wife and adult son to leave their home. He went to the boiler room, turned on the mitre saw and cut his left foot off above the ankle. Not only did he cut it off, but he burned his severed foot so that there could be no possibility of it being reattached.
He then went into the garage, called for emergency services and waited for them to arrive. When paramedics arrived, he was bleeding profusely, his body was covered in blood and he was very near death. They got his severed foot from the fire, but it was too badly burned to reattach. He was airlifted to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition. Police are investigating the case as an attempted suicide.
This case does not appear to be an attempted suicide; however, if it happened some places in the US, it could definitely be considered attempted suicide; he would have been dead before the ambulance arrived.
If he intended to end his life, there would be no reason for him to burn his foot...he would not need it anymore. Hans probably just did not like to work and had become comfortable living on his benefits.
The irony is his intentional injury does not necessarily qualify him for disability. Once he is recovered from his injury, his ability to work will be reassessed. Unfortunately for Hans...he will still be required to work, but this time, without his left foot.
Peace
