Shameful Apathetic Behavior

This is one of the most horrific videos I have seen. This happened on a busy street in Guangzhou Foshan. It shows a 2-year-old girl, Yueyue, being run over on October 13, 2011.

The driver of the van obviously knew he hit someone or something because he stops, but doesn't get out to investigate and he runs over her again with the back wheels of the van. Several minutes later, a second vehicle runs over this child and continues on.

But the most horrifying fact is eighteen people pass by this child and continue on their way. NOT ONE went to help her as she lay in the street for what seems like forever. Finally, the 19th person, a grandmother, moves the child out of the street.

The father is saying in the video, according to reports, the driver of the car that hit Yueyue asked for his bank account number and how much money he wants.

Watching this video, I had a number of emotions: shock, disbelief, disgust, sadness, sympathy and anger. How can people be so heartless, so cold and insensitive to leave an injured little girl laying in the street?

I was aware of this video several days ago, but I waited to write about because I feared she would not live. Unfortunately, Yueyue passed away on October 21, 2011. When I watched the video, she was still alive which made it a bit easier knowing she might get better.

If you want to watch, here is the video:

WARNING: Very graphic content

I know the video leaves so many questions unanswered so I will try to answer them. People live and do business in this area; they usually live over top of their business.

The mother turned her back for seconds to take in the laundry.

Shop owners in direct view of Yueyue say they didn't see her, they were busy doing business. One shop owner says it was "dark", it was raining earlier. Another shop owner says it was noisy, and still another shop owner admits hearing (he doesn't say he saw her) her weak cries, but didn't respond because it is not unusual for children to cry during storms. The entire incident was recorded on a security camera in the area. The 19 people and the 2 drivers had no idea they were being recorded, but I am not sure it would have made a difference. Many Chinese people say they are afraid of a lawsuit if they help someone who is injured.

If the driver of the van, driver of the car, or either one of the eighteen people who passed her by sought help for Yueyue, she might still be alive today. They should be ashamed and must live out their remaining days with the knowledge that it is possibly because of their negligence and apathetic behavior that she is dead.

Rest in peace, Yueyue.

In disgust,

Venus
