Apparently, she sprayed pepper spray more than once. There was so much residual pepper spray in the store, firefighters had ventilate the store with fans.
A police officer who was in the area responded quickly, but he choked on pepper spray when he entered the store. He heard a woman screaming outside the rear of the store. He went to investigate and found Appling yelling at two employees who had chased her out of the store. There were Coors Light Beer cans scattered on the ground and the employees said the beer was among the items she attempted to steal.
Appling, who weighs "at least 300 pounds" (she looks a biscuit short of 400 pounds) ignored the officer several times when he asked her to put her hands behind her back to be handcuffed. A back up officer was called to help arrest Appling.
Along with the Coors Lite Beer (well, at least it was lite beer), Appling tried to steal five packs of cheese, vegetable oil, five packs of bacon and two packs of chicken wings.
The items she attempted to steal were valued at $88.27, but because she has had more than three shoplifting convictions, she was charged with felony theft by shoplifting. Appling was also charged with aggravated assault, simple battery, disorderly conduct and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. She probably isn't smiling now.
At the time of her arrest, Appling was wanted for a felony probation violation because of a shoplifting arrest in Madison County in January of this year. The report of that incident, where she took her clothes off in the parking lot, is here. She also had warrants for her arrest in Oconee and Fulton counties.
This piggly may have been wiggly when officers tried to arrest her, but she won't be able to wiggle herself out of these charges.
Peace
