Deputies Knock on Wrong Door; Kill Innocent Man

Three Lake County, Florida deputies were looking for murder suspect, Jonathan Brown, at the Blueberry Hill apartment complex around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

Brown, who deputies saw riding a motorcycle, ran from deputies.  Deputies later found Brown's motorcycle parked "closest" to the front door of apartment 114. They knocked on the door and Andrew Scott, 26, opened the door with a gun in his hand.  K-9 Deputy Richard Sylvester shot and killed him.

The person interviewed said there was fault on both sides. The fault lies solely with the sheriff's deputies.

1. Deputies knocked on the wrong door; Brown didn't live at that apartment.

Why didn't K-9 Deputy Richard Sylvester use the dog for tracking Brown?  Just because the motorcycle was parked closest to apartment 114 did not ensure that the owner lived in that apartment. Unless assigned parking, apartment dwellers park wherever they can get a spot.

Also, if you knew the cops were chasing you, you would need to be pretty stupid to drive home and park in front of your door.

 2. Deputies knocked (loudly, I'm sure) on the door after 1:30 a.m. and they didn't identify themselves.

There was no peephole in the door. Scott opens the door at 2:00 a.m. with his gun.  Sheriff's office said Deputy Sylvester had a vest with "Sheriff" on it. However, it was dark outside and unless he had night vision goggles on, Brown wouldn't have seen the vest initially.

3. Deputies found drugs and drug paraphernalia in the apartment.

So K-9 Deputy Sylvester used the dog after Scott was killed.  Guess this makes it fine to kill him because he was a criminal anyway?

4. Sheriff's deputies lied about identifying themselves; they did not.  They excuse this by saying deputies not identifying themselves at Scott's door was a "minor detail".

A "minor detail" that cost Andrew Scott his life.

5. Deputies aren't required to identify themselves; they want the element of surprise.

The only way out of the apartment was through the front door or the windows on the front of the apartment; there were no back doors.  Why didn't they surround the front of the apartment and then knock on the door?  How would you surprise a suspect who knows you are chasing him?

Where, in any of this, is Andrew Scott at fault?  I hope his family retains an attorney so Deputy Sylvester doesn't get off with a slap on the hand.

No more visits to Florida for me.  There is something really wrong in Florida.  It's in the water, the air, food...people just can't seem to escape it.  It's not just criminals, it's also people who should know better.

Maybe, it's time the US makes Florida an island.
