A Michigan woman, Amanda Clayton, won $1 million dollars in the lottery in September and she continues to receive $200 in food stamps each month.
Unbelievable...and her excuse is that she is struggling. She says she has two houses, she doesn't have a job and she has bills to pay...WHAT!? She claims she received "just a little over half"...that's over $500,000!
Even more strange is that she isn't breaking the law by continuing to receive food stamps. Just yesterday, the State finally stopped her food stamps. A Michigan lawmaker said that the news "of a lump sum lottery winner using food stamps should inspire his colleagues to finally pass a law to end such abuse."
"Lawmakers vowed to require more communication between the lottery and the welfare agency, but legislation still is pending. Republican Rep. Dave Agema says an "entitlement attitude" must end."
The lottery has been around for a while and it's odd that the State didn't have laws in place to cover welfare recipients who win the lottery. This is not the first time this situation has occurred. Leroy Fick won $2 million dollars in the lottery in the spring of 2010 and he also continued to use his food stamp card.
The state depends on the recipients to notify them if they win the lottery. Umm...and how's that working for them. If other recipients who win big in the lottery are like these two, the State can forget about self-reporting.
One of the problems with people in this country today is some people have a sense of entitlement. "I should get....", "I deserve...". Just because it's available doesn't mean you need, should get, or deserve assistance. To continue receiving food stamps after winning millions is unethical. I doubt either of them know what the word means.
Peace
